The use of the grid in art has a tradition as long as humankind; however, in the 20th century, Kasimir Malevitch is probably recognised as one of the earliest exponents. Other artists who have employed grids include Piet Mondrian, Leon Polk-Smith, Paul Klee, Camille Graeser, François Morellet, Max Bill, Gerhard Richter and many others.
